Viognier

High Canyon Series

Winemaking

Fermented and aged on the lees for 8 months in neutral French oak.

Place

From a very steep, densely planted block near the top of the High Canyon portion of WeatherEye.

Winemaker’s Notes

This wine has an evocative nose of white peach, nectarine, honey blossom, vanilla, lychee, and wet river stone. Very rich and opulent on the palate, showing waves of white stone fruits, almond brioche, crushed mace, and wet stone minerality. The finish on this beautiful wine goes on for nearly a minute, showing the potential of this site for a sometimes finicky variety.

As is virtually guaranteed with any and all wines from this unique vineyard, the Viognier has multiple dimensions, densely packed fruits, exceptional detail and extraordinary length. Pollen and candied citrus, orange creamsicle and key lime pie flavors veer into banana and papaya as it takes the palate on a roller coaster ride. As with previous vintages, this 2022 captures the fruit (both flesh and rind), botanical highlights and precision focus of the best Viogniers I've ever had. And goes the extra mile, extending the finish while adding further details of mineral, matchstick and metal. Absolutely extraordinary in every way.

Wildly impressive, this Viognier comes from the earliest plantings in the WeatherEye Vineyard by Washington, visionary viticulturist Ryan Johnson; the fruit is fully allocated to the Liminal brand—gorgeous aromatics of lemon curd and honeyed ginger, dried meadow white flowers and Madagascar vanilla bean. The palate shows a rich texture owing to the 8 months on lees. This is an opulent white wine, but it retains a brilliance of structure and lift. Lemon oil, cake batter, and macerated peaches. This threads a needle where most domestic Viognier falls flat. It offers the richness and opulence of Viognier while remaining fresh and upright.

Coming from the WeatherEye Vineyard this beautiful new 2022 Viognier comes from a parcel of land high atop Red Mountain. This is wonderfully textured stuff with honeysuckle water and hints of rosemary alongside rich honeydew melon and shades of juicy nectarine on the palate. Fresh and lithe with a smooth texture and great underlying tension, enjoy now and over the next eight plus years to come. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2022 Viognier High Canyon Series WeatherEye Vineyard entices with a gorgeous blend of confectionary spice, lemon sorbet, chamomile and yellow apples. Silken and weighty in feel yet energetic and spry, this pleases the palate with its ripe orchard fruits as a saturation of salty minerals adds tactile grip. Zesty acidity keeps the mouth watering as the 2022 tapers off with medium length and vivid notes of ripe nectarine and raw almond that linger on and on. Superb.

Fermented and aged on lees for 8 months in neutral French oak, this is a vibrantly aromatic wine, with focused notes of honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and tangerine zest – immediately identifiable as Viognier. Full-bodied, rounded, richly textured stone fruit flavors follow. The flavors are penetrating and intense but exquisitely balanced. A layered mouthfeel ups the interest, as does a long, long finish. It brings the variety’s richness, but, unlike most, it doesn’t bring the heat along with it. It’s a standout – the best Viognier I’ve had from the Washington side of the Columbia Valley. Critic's Choice.
