Block 47 Cabernet Sauvignon

Block Highlight Series

Winemaking

Aged 22 months in 70% new French oak.

Place

This beautiful block sits on the lower section of the Red Mountain side of the vineyard. Featuring a perfect southwest aspect, it gets the maximum sun exposure for depth and concentration. The land itself is wind-blown loess covering an alluvial floodplain, dotted with indigenous sage.

Winemaker's Notes

Notably opaque in color, with soaring aromas of blueberry and black raspberry reduction, black currant liqueur, charcoal embers, chocolate Madeleine, violet essence, licorice pastille, wild sage, and Ethiopian coffee. The palate on this wine is not to be missed, supremely dense and concentrated yet still dancing on the palate with flavors of concentrated black fruits, Belgian chocolate powder, anise, and dried herbs. Utterly captivating and always evolving in the glass, this will be a fun wine to follow for a long time to come.

The 2022 Liminal Block 47 Cabernet Sauvignon is a commanding and deeply structured expression of Red Mountain, crafted entirely from Clone 47 and matured for 22 months in 70% new French oak. Its inky, almost opaque hue sets the stage for a profoundly aromatic bouquet of blackcurrant, ripe boysenberry, and crushed blueberry, layered with notes of cedar, dark chocolate, and pencil shavings. Hints of star anise, crushed stone, and roasted espresso further add to its complexity. The palate is both expansive and finely honed, delivering waves of concentrated black plum, licorice, and toasted spice, wrapped in firm yet polished tannins. The oak influence is seamlessly integrated, enhancing the wine’s structure without overshadowing its vibrant core of fruit and earthy undertones. As it unfolds, subtle notes of sage, leather, and smoked black tea emerge, giving the wine even greater depth. The acidity provides tension and balance, ensuring this Cabernet will evolve beautifully over time. The lengthy, resonant finish is marked by lingering graphite, cocoa dust, and a touch of crushed violets, leaving an impression of both power and finesse. While its structure demands patience, those willing to cellar this wine will be rewarded with a stunning evolution over the coming decades. 140 cases made. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

This single block 100% Cabernet spent 22 months 70% new French oak (down from 100% new in 2021). It has the focus and penetration of mountain grown grapes, tightly bound, compact and showing compressed black fruits and grainy tannins with accent flavors of granite and graphite and coffee grounds. The wine’s purity and density demands decanting or at minimum another half decade of bottle age. On the second day the wine begins to open grudgingly. 1961 Latour? Time will tell.

All Clone 47 Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 47 offers up a saturated purple hue as well as a beautiful array of cassis and black raspberry-like fruit supported by plenty of spicy oak and graphite nuances. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet structured and tannic, it's impeccably made but not for the instant gratification crowd. I suspect it will be more approachable once in bottle, but the cellar will be your friend with this one.

Haunting aromas of Mexican chocolate, exotic Moroccan spices, and smoky rose petals announce this wine's depth and ripeness. The Block 47 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a vineyard on the lower flanks of the WeatherEye site, yet it is still higher than the surrounding Red Mountain AVA. It is amply structured, with plenty of tannins carrying rich black fruits, tobacco spice, and sweet, spicy black plums. Still taut and tightly wound, this wine needs time to unwind. It is best after 2028.

100% varietal, this wine was aged 22 months in French oak (70% new). The aromas bring notes of cocoa, barrel spice, and espresso bean, with the oak currently out front. Rich, soft, smooth, full-bodied flavors follow, with fruit and barrel playing off each other. It needs significant time for the oak to more fully integrate, but the stuffing is there. Enjoy from 2030-2038. Cellar Stocker.
