Block 47 Cabernet Sauvignon

Skirting perfection in the glass, the 2021 Block 47 Cabernet from Liminal gifts a glowing dark purple and blue core with a lighter neon purple rim. Pronounced and feverish in the glass, the nose explodes with those Red Mountain Cabernet notes of macerated purple fruits, black plum skin, cassis, dried mountain sagebrush, dusty earth, sweet vanilla, cracked peppercorn, and orange zest. Balanced, elegant yet powerful, and completely delicious, this Cab will age for decades with proper cellaring. Absolutely stunning! Better in 2025. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

All varietal, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 47 Block Highlight Series has a vivid purple hue as well as a brilliant nose of pure blue fruits (cassis, currants) interwoven with notions of new leather, cedar pencil, and chalky minerality as well as beautifully integrated background oak. This full-bodied beauty has a concentrated, layered, structured mouthfeel, beautiful yet building tannins, and a great, mineral-laced finish. It's a killer bottle of wine that's going to benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and evolve for two decades.

Seriously good even now, the 2021 Liminal ‘Block 47’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a masterpiece made by winemaker Chris Peterson. On the nose this exudes class with outstanding aromatic complexity. Violets, sagebrush, loamy soils, espresso grounds and blueberry compote all mark the nose. The palate is big and burly with serious weight and underlying finesse. Loads of mouth-watering acidity greet you, as this is loaded with an opulent core of black and blue fruits, with graphite and Arabica bean flavors. A total stunner, give this about 30 minutes in the decanter if consuming now. Drink 2024-2046.

This single block Cabernet spent 20 months 100% new French oak. It’s almost mandatory to cellar this wine, as the compact density cannot be unpacked in a few minutes or even hours. Deeply layered flavors show veins of black fruits, cassis, ground espresso, dark chocolate, black tea, char, graphite and cut tobacco. Given the dense, gritty tannins I’d suggest another five years of bottle age until it hits a sweet spot to begin drinking. This could evolve for decades.

Rich and opulent nose. Mineral intensity of crushed basalt, pencil shavings, hot stone and anise mingle with an effusively fragrant note of wild desert sage and eucalyptus. A core of black plums and intense baking chocolate is framed by serious grippy tannins. Sappy blackberry, rose hips and smoky umami finish the palate, complete with an abiding sense of elegance. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 47 WeatherEye Vineyard is a sultry beast. It is wildly expressive, blending sweet lavender and dark chocolate with crushed wild berries and the slightest hint of white pepper. Soft and supple, with nearly creamy textures and brilliant acidity to balance, it opens with a thrust of minerality before giving way to orange-tinged red and black fruits. Long, potent and structured, the 2021 finishes spicy, with silty tannins that tug at the cheeks as a pleasantly bitter tinge adds lovely punctuation. This is rockstar juice.

This is 100% varietal, all coming from a single block. It was aged 20 months in 100% new French oak. The aromas show notes of roasted espresso bean, char, coffee, cherry, and chocolate, while the palate brings finesse, subtlety, and balance. There’s pleasing textural richness and intensity, while it remains graceful on its feet. Beautifully integrated tannins provide plenty of scaffolding. Overall though, it’s the precision, not opulence, of this wine that most impresses. That and, every time you take a sip, it immediately begs for another. Enjoy from 2028 to 2038. Cellar Stocker.
