The Mountain Tower

Vineyard Series

Winemaking

Aged 20 months in a third each of new, second fill, and neutral barrels. 40% Cabernet Franc, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot.

Place

All three of these blocks lie quite close together on the steep north-facing side of WeatherEye. Here, full ripeness is reached while preserving great varietal character and lively acidity.

Winemaker's Notes

Elegant and evocative aromas of red and black currants, dark plum, violet, Ugandan chocolate, wild tobacco, crushed vanilla bean, and dried thyme. Suave and poised on the palate, with beautifully complex black and blue fruit compote, crushed wild roses, clean tilled dark earth, and windblown herbs. This wine, though drinking great now, is still gathering power, and will age gracefully for many years to come.

The 2022 Liminal The Mountain Tower Red Wine is a dynamic and expressive blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 27% Merlot, fermented in concrete and steel before aging for 18 months in neutral large-format French oak and a concrete egg. Its deep violet hue is edged with an electric magenta rim, hinting at the vibrancy within. The nose bursts with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe red cherry, and wild lavender, interwoven with nuances of worn saddle leather, crushed rose petals, and a subtle trace of exotic spice. The palate is both powerful and finessed, revealing layers of juicy boysenberry, dark plum, and a touch of black tea, all wrapped in finely integrated tannins that lend structure without overpowering the wine’s graceful flow. A core of graphite and crushed rock minerality underscores its depth, while a whisper of cocoa-dusted espresso lingers beneath the fruit. The mid-palate is dense and impeccably balanced, delivering remarkable intensity while maintaining a lifted freshness that carries through to the finish. As it evolves in the glass, secondary notes of dried herbs and cedar emerge, adding further intrigue to an already captivating profile. Just 166 cases made. Highly recommended.

Liminal’s blends change significantly from vintage to vintage, a good sign that vintage variation is in play. This new cuvée is 40% Cabernet Franc, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, fermented in both concrete and steel, and aged 18 months in neutral casks and a concrete egg. It’s compelling from first sniff to last swallow, a tie-dyed Bordeaux blend offering a complex tapestry of blue and black berries, Asian spices, chai tea, mocha and more. Great balance, length and development all through to the (lightly) bitter end.

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Franc (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%), and Merlot, coming from a site on the top and north side of Red Mountain. Aged 20 months in equal parts new, second fill, and neutral barrels, the aromas are thoroughly enchanting, with notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, cassis, cedar box, dried herb, and assorted spices, showing a lot of class and subtlety. On the palate, there’s volume, richness of fruit flavor, firm tannins, and pleasingly bright acidity. The balance is exquisite. It’s a complete stunner, a classic hammer in a velvet glove. Enjoy from 2029 to 2036. It drinks best at the cooler end of the 62-66 degree spectrum. Cellar Stocker.

It's another killer wine from this team with a pure, full-bodied, incredibly elegant profile that has so much to love. Black cherries, new leather, spring flowers, and a kiss of background spicy wood all define the bouquet, and it has ripe, polished tannins, rock-solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish.

The Mountain Tower is a dense and brooding wine, predominantly Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon 33% and Merlot 27%. From the steep, north-facing side of WeatherEye, an assemblage of wine from three different blocks, which spends nearly two years in French oak and is 33% new. Aromas of kirsch and blackberry with freshly slivered dark chocolate and the classic mineral depth of crushed basalt from Red Mountain, just below. The palate offers generous fruits, with gobs of blue and black berry fruits, spiced black plums, and bitter notes of espresso bean. Upright in its structure with firm tannins, this is a wine built to unwind over time.
