Grenache

The 2021 Liminal Grenache is a knockout wine from this vintage and might be the best edition of this wine that I have tasted yet. Very dark in color, this offers a brooding bouquet of purple rose petals alongside citrus zest, cardamom and shades of roasted dates, with garrigue accents. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture and glorious sense of length. Finishing exceedingly long with bright red fruits and herbs, this is nothing short of a stunning Grenache that has a long way to go in the cellar. Drink 2023-2037.

From the top of Red Mountain comes Liminal's High Canyon Series, the original WeatherEye bush-trained vines—elegant floral aromatics of lavender, violet, wild ripe strawberries, desert scrub, tobacco leaf and raspberry candy. Fleshy and elegant, with Luxardo cherry syrup, cinder, sagebrush and savoury wild fennel flavours. This is a gorgeous Grenache.

Aged 18 months in neutral 500L puncheon, the 2021 High Canyon Series Grenache from Liminal is stunning as always. Bright neon red ruby core with a light blue rim, the nose screams Red Mountain with those telltale mountain sagebrush tones that pop from the glass alongside red cherry, sliced strawberry, lavender flower, and cedary herbs. It goes down smooth as silk despite the higher levels of alcohol, but the fine tannins and lemony acidity balance everything out. 75 cases were crafted.

What an amazingly light and delicate texture given the wine’s hefty 15% ABV. Aromatically, this is a hunger-inducing combination of boysenberry pie, grilled teriyaki beef kebabs and the chocolate I associate with a beloved Tootsie Pops. The 2021 Grenache WeatherEye Vineyard High Canyon Series captivates with a bouquet of violets and lavender over wild strawberries with suggestions of wet stone that add earthy depths. It's soft and enveloping, with ripe red and blue fruits dazzling over a juicy acidity core. The 2021 finishes classically dry and lightly structured, pinching at the cheeks with a primary concentration that lingers as dried blueberries fade. This is gorgeous today, yet the best is yet to come.

Fruit for this wine comes from three micro-blocks, including the gobelet-trained ‘La Mesita’ block and two meter-by-meter echalas-trained blocks. It was aged 18 months in neutral French oak puncheons. As in previous vintages, it’s outrageously dark for the variety. The aromas offer notes of black raspberry, plum, flower, and dried herb, bringing clarity and detail. Piercingly pure, full-bodied, ripe red and blue fruit flavors follow. It shows a lot of hang time on the finish. This is a captivating, beautifully unadorned look at this variety. The sky is the limit for Grenache at this site.

All Grenache, the medium ruby-hued 2021 Grenache High Canyon offers up solid Grenache notes of savory red fruits, peppery herbs, smoked meats, and obvious minerality. It's a medium-bodied Grenache with a supple, layered mouthfeel, ripe and integrated tannins, and a great finish. This beauty picks up more floral and spicy nuances with time in the glass, and I suspect it's going to evolve gracefully for at least 10-12 years. It plays in the more perfumed, elegant spectrum of Grenache.
